Editorial Guidelines

Who writes here

Every article is written by Jane Halloway, the only consultant in the practice. Nothing on this site is ghostwritten, outsourced to a content agency, or generated and published without a human rewriting it. If that ever changes, this page changes first and the byline changes with it.

Articles exist for one reason: they are the long version of an answer Jane has given on a consultation call often enough that writing it down properly saves everybody time. That is also why the topics look unglamorous. Nobody searches for “curated interiors”; they search for why their greige went lilac.

No sponsored content, ever

No paid placements. No brand has ever paid to appear in an article, and we do not accept offers to.
No affiliate links. Product links go to the manufacturer or a normal retailer. We earn nothing if you click them.
No gifted products reviewed as if bought. If a sample were ever supplied, the article would say so in the first paragraph.
No trade commission. The same rule that governs our consulting work governs the journal: the reader is the client.

This is not a moral position so much as a practical one. The moment a recommendation carries a margin, you can no longer tell whether it is advice or inventory.

How an article gets researched

It starts from real projects. Numbers, bid figures and dimensions come from work the practice has actually done, anonymised unless a client has given written permission to name the project.
Prices are dated and regional. Cost figures reflect the US market at the time of writing and are labelled as estimates. Materials and labor move; a 2026 number is a 2026 number.
Codes and safety claims get checked against the source. Anything touching lead paint, ventilation, electrical or permits is checked against the relevant authority, such as the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rules, rather than another blog.
Industry guidance is cited where it exists. Clearance and layout conventions reference bodies such as the NKBA and ASID.
If we are unsure, we say so. A hedge is more useful than false confidence about somebody's house.

What we will not publish

Advice that belongs to a licensed trade. Structural, electrical, gas, plumbing and asbestos work goes to a licensed professional, as set out in our disclaimer.
Before-and-after photography that misrepresents scope, lighting or staging.
Client photographs, addresses or budgets without written permission.
Trend pieces with no practical decision in them.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, we would rather know. Email hello@bumsfuzzledjane.com with the article and the problem.

Factual errors are corrected as soon as they are confirmed, and the article carries a dated correction note at the foot.
Prices and lead times are reviewed at least annually; the published date on each article tells you how fresh the figures are.
Substantive rewrites get an updated date rather than being quietly swapped out.
Typos we just fix.

Use of AI

Drafting assistance and copy-editing tools may be used the way a spellchecker is. Judgment, numbers, recommendations and the final text are Jane's, and nothing is published that she has not read line by line and stands behind. No article is auto-generated and posted.

Reader privacy

Reading the journal sets no advertising cookies and adds you to no list. There is no newsletter gate and nothing is hidden behind an email address. See the privacy policy for the full detail.
