Tell us what has you bumfuzzled

Send the room, the floor plan, the screenshot folder, the contractor quote with the line item nobody will explain. Nothing needs tidying and nothing needs deciding first. Every message to bumfuzzledjane.com is read by Jane Halloway herself, and the first reply is a real answer rather than a sales call.

The project form

Start with the messy version

Six fields and a paragraph is plenty. The more specific you are about the room, the deadline and the budget, the more useful the first reply will be, and the first reply costs nothing either way.

About you

Only used if email goes sideways.

Useful for light, climate and lead times.

About the project

Guessing is fine. Full scope and fees are on the services page, and live builds are covered by renovation advisory.

The build and the furnishings, not our fee.

Two paragraphs beats two lines. The checklist further down this page covers what makes a reply genuinely useful. Photos and plans can follow by email once we are talking.

Fields marked with an asterisk are required.

No mystery

What happens after you hit send

Three steps, and not one of them is a discovery call with somebody who is not Jane.

  1. 01

Jane reads it, not a bot

Everything sent through bumfuzzledjane.com lands in one inbox in Portland and is read the day it arrives. Nothing is routed to an assistant, nothing is scored by software, and sending it does not sign you up for anything.

  2. 02

    You get an honest recommendation

Within one working day you will have a reply naming the smallest service likely to unstick you, the flat fee, and the reason. Sometimes that reply is that you do not need us yet, or that an article already covers it.

  3. 03

We book the time and quote it flat

If you want to go ahead, you get a calendar link and a short written scope with the fee on it. Nothing begins before that is in writing, and the number does not move afterward.

Make the first reply count

What to include to get a useful reply

Write two lines and you will still get an answer. Include these and the answer will be specific enough to act on the same week.

  • Photos from two opposite corners of the room, taken in daylight, untidied. A phone camera is genuinely fine.
  • Rough dimensions and the ceiling height, or a floor plan. A sketch on the back of an envelope counts.
  • The budget you would rather not say out loud. A range is enough, and it changes the advice more than anything else on this list.
  • What you have already tried and why it did not work: two paint samples, a rug that was too small, a quote you walked away from.
  • Your real deadline and what is driving it. A baby, a listing date, or a contractor who starts in March are all different problems.
  • Three contractor bids, if that is what has you stuck. Send all of them, including the one you do not trust, and we will read them line by line.
  • If the house predates 1978, mention it. Lead-safe renovation rules change both the sequence and the cost, and week one is a much better time to find out than week nine.

Then send it. Everything else can be worked out in the reply, and nobody at bumfuzzledjane.com has ever refused to answer a message because the photos were badly lit.

Sitting room photographed from a corner in daylight, showing a vintage patterned rug, woven wall baskets and mid-century seating.
A phone photo like this one is plenty: daylight, shot from a corner, furniture where it actually lives. This room took one call and one rug. See more in recent projects.

Before you write

Questions about getting in touch

Scheduling, fees and privacy. Scope sits on the services page, and the broader questions are answered on the homepage FAQ.

Go to the form
How quickly will I hear back?

Within one working day, Monday to Friday. A message sent on Friday evening is usually answered Monday morning. If a full week passes with nothing, a spam filter ate it somewhere between us, so call the studio on +1 (503) 555-0148 and we will sort it out.

Do I have to know which service I need before I write?

No, and most people do not. Describe the problem in plain language and Jane will name the service that fits, including the option of no service at all. A good number of inquiries are answered in one email and never become a project, which is a perfectly acceptable outcome for everybody.

Can we meet at the Portland studio instead?

Yes, by appointment, if your project is in the Portland metro area. Most work is remote regardless, and roughly two thirds of clients are out of state, so an in-person meeting is a preference rather than a requirement. Direction calls usually open up within seven to ten days; room plans and whole-home concepts begin three to five weeks out.

What happens to the photos and details I send?

They are used to answer you and for nothing else. Contact details are never sold, rented or added to a list, and no project photograph appears on the site or on social media without written permission. Ask us to delete a thread and it is deleted.

Not ready to write yet?

Nothing here expires. When the saved folder finally becomes unbearable, the form is still at the top of this page. Until then, these are free.
